The Long Night Against Procrastination – March 31, Penticton Campus

Thursday, March 17, 2016

Penticton Campus hosted the first Long Night Against Procrastination event on Thursday, March 31. The event provided a venue for students to end their procrastination, complete end of term assignments, and have access to learning support in a fun and supportive environment.

In total 47 students attended, 20 of which made it to the end of the night and celebrated with a “survivors’ breakfast.” Students were able to get research, writing and citing help from faculty and staff from the English, Psychology, Criminal & Social Justice, Library, and Student Success Centre departments.

Hot drinks, snacks, and midnight pizza fueled students’work. Organizers provided study breaks for students, including stargazing, yoga, prize draws and a movie showing. Faculty and staff were impressed by the dedication shown by students, who worked through the night and were still asking for help with papers at 6 a.m!

Login issues? Turn off autofill

Monday, March 14, 2016

The Library is getting an increasing number of reports from students who are unable to access library databases from off-campus. They are seeing the error message, “OC student no. or PIN incorrect – Please try again.” If you are having this problem, please clear your Internet browser’s saved usernames and passwords, and turn off the autofill and autocomplete settings. This should fix the problem and allow you to login. You may need to clear your browser’s cache for the changes to take effect.

Specific instructions on turning off autofill:

The Library is working on a long-term solution to the problem, but in the meantime we suggest you turn off autofill. Please contact the Library if you continue to have trouble.

A.K.A. Fangirl – Red Dot Players Winter production

Sunday, March 6, 2016

FanGirl PosterA new comedy by OC English Professor, Jeremy Beaulne, made its world premier on Thursday, March 10th. More information can be found on the Red Dot Players website. In celebration, the Library foyer will showcase a selection of graphic novels from our Kelowna and Salmon Arm Campus Libraries. Themes range from the Shakespearean to the Hobbit, Persepolis (Marjane Satrapi), Showa 1939-1944: A history of Japan (Shigeru Mizuki) and Bumperhead (Gilbert Hernandez). Don’t be afraid to release your inner geek!

A.K.A. Fangirl was the winner of the “Best Full-Length Play” award in the 2014 Theatre BC Playwriting competition. The play focuses on Nichelle O’Neil, high school student and aspiring comic book creator, and her experiences at Fanaconda Fest, a science fiction convention. As the play begins, Nichelle has just gotten into an apocalyptic fight with her best friend, Cassie, the person who was going to accompany her to Fanaconda Fest. Although she is feeling alone and betrayed, Nichelle decides to attend the convention by herself in the hope of meeting her idol, the reclusive comic book auteur Trevor Parker-Wood. Throughout the play, Nichelle’s story is juxtaposed with the adventures of the Midnight Sentinels, the superhero protagonists of the graphic novel she is writing.

All performances took place in the Okanagan College Theatre (Room S104, Student Services Building, Okanagan College, 1000 KLO Road, Kelowna). For more information about A.K.A. Fangirl, please contact writer/director Jeremy Beaulne at JBeaulne@okanagan.bc.ca.

The poster for A.K.A. Fangirl  was created by Aleksina Teto, one of the students in Okanagan College’s Diploma in Writing and Publishing Program. A huge thank you to Aleksina, her instructor Jason Dewinetz, and all of the other Writing and Publishing students who designed posters for the production!
