Canadian Businesses Database – New!

Business People IconSearch Canadian Businesses (part of ReferenceUSA database) to find accurate and verified information on every company in Canada. Selected criteria include employee size, sales volume, Primary and Secondary SIC codes, Executive title, Ticker symbol, Yellow page classification/Ad size, & location type. The database contains more than 1.5 million businesses, with files processed monthly against the National Change of Address program, ensuring information is accurate and up-to-date. RefUSA1

If you are creating a marketing plan, conducting competitive analyses, or trying to locate people, this database will be highly useful. Search for similar businesses in a geographic area, find information on competitors, search for businesses to buy, and more. Students can access information that may help in job seeking, such as finding human resource contact names, company descriptions, and website links to job postings. Find articles that may assist in research, including data summaries to profile neighbourhoods, spending habits and growth of a business, and businesses that are similar in size and scope.

DownloadDownload results as excel spreadsheets to easily manage your information. Download/printing is  limited to 50 results per search when on-campus, and 20 results per search when off-campus. Information can also be used to create maps and charts indicating things such as business locations, sales volume, and points of interest. Export data in pie or bar charts for data visualization or view data with colour-coded heat mapping.

Easily Save Articles & Results in Library Databases

ScreenDid you know you can easily save articles found in databases or OCtopus? Save entire result lists without even leaving the database and save money by avoiding the cost of printing. As an alternative to saving article PDFs or emailing them to yourself, create a personal profile in the database and save articles and searches to your profile. Access your personal profile and retrieve research from home on your personal computer, from on campus, or using your  mobile device. *Note: If you are off-campus you will be prompted to login/authenticate as an OC user using your 300 number and surname. This is NOT the same as signing in to a database. 

In OCtopus and other EBSCO databases (eg. Business Source, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Academic Search)

To save an entire result list:
  1. Login to your EBSCOhost account using the ‘Sign In’ link located at the top right of the screen.
  2. If you are a new user, create an account. Your username can be anything. Many students prefer to use their OC student ID number for consistency, but this is not required. You password can also be anything. If you are a returning user, login using the username and password you previously created.
  3. Conduct a search.
  4. eBook searchOn the results page, you should see a button that says “Share” (located at the top right of the results list).Click the share button to see a drop-down list of options.
  5. At the top of the menu that appears, look for the text, “Add to folder: Results (1 – 50), Add search to folder”. Click on the option you would like.
    1. Clicking “Results (1 – 50)” will add the entire first page of search results to your folder. Click to page two and follow the same steps to add results 51 – 100 to your folder.
    2. Clicking “Add search to folder:”, will add the search to your folder. At a later time you can go back to your folder, select the saved search, and the database/OCtopus will re-run the search with up-to-date results.
    3. Alternate option: At the bottom of the menu that appears, look for the text, “Use Permalink: Persistent link to search (copy & paste)”. Copy the link provided and email it to yourself or a classmate, or save it in a document for later.
  6. To view the items in your folder ensure you are signed in to your EBSCO account, then click “Folder” located at the top right of the page.

StarRemember that you must be signed in to save items to your folder for later use. If you add items to a folder when you are not signed in and you leave the database, items in the folder will be lost.

To save a single article or record:
  1. Login to your EBSCOhost account using the ‘Sign In’ link located at the top right of the screen.
  2. If you are a new user, create an account. Your username can be anything. Many students prefer to use their OC student ID number for consistency, but this is not required. You password can also be anything. If you are a returning user, login using the username and password you previously created.
  3. Conduct a search.
  4. Find an article, book, or result that you would like to save.
    1. Save the item directly from the results list by clicking on the blue folder icon. Click the icon again to remove the item.
    2. Save the item from the detailed information page by clicking on the title of the result you would like to save. You will be taken to the detailed information screen. On the right side of the screen under the “Tools” area, click “Add to folder”. Click again to remove it from the folder.

Other Non-EBSCO Databases (Such as ProQuest’s ABI/Inform, Ovid, or Gale)

  1. Follow the steps very similar to those above. Remember, you will have to create a personal account in each of these databases. Most links to login are located at the top right of the page. Create a new personal account or login to your existing account from within the database:
    1. ProQuest InterfaceProQuest Databases (Hoovers, ABI/Inform, CBCA Complete, Canadian Newsstand) – Create a ‘My Research’ account via the link at the top right of the page. Add items to your ‘My Research’ account.
    2. Gale (Artemis, Virtual Reference Library, CPI.Q, Literature Resource Center, Literature Criticism) – To save the entire list of results, look for the “Bookmark” link on the right side of the page or at the top of result lists. To save individual results click on the folder icon. Then use the “My Folder” or “Saved Articles” link at the top of the page to view items in the folder. In some Gale databases you may need to select or check a result and then click the “Marked Items” link at the top of the page. While in “My Folder”, “Saved Articles, or “Marked Items”, you can download all records or email the content. *Gale databases do not allow you to create personalized accounts. After you leave the database the contents of the folder will be emptied. 
    3. JSTORJSTOR – Use the login link at the top right of the screen to create or login to an account.
    4. Oxford (Journals, Reference Online) – Sign in or create a new account using the “My Account” or “Personal Profile: Sign In” link at the top right of the screen. In Oxford Reference, use the “My Content” or “My Searches” links at the top of the page to access articles you have viewed and your previous searches.
    5. Ovid (EBM Reviews, LWW Total Access) – Create a new account or sign in using the “My Account” link at the top of the page. Conduct a search and at the top of the results screen look for the “Add to My Projects” link. You can add entire result lists or check/select individual articles to add.
