Kelowna Library Ryga Awards Display

As a  celebration of Word Ruckus (March 23) and the recently released short-list for the George Ryga Award for Social Awareness in Literature, the Kelowna Campus of Okanagan College Library is featuring a display of  short-listed titles and past Ryga Award winners. Visit the foyer of the Library to browse or borrow from this collection.

The 2012 shortlist:

  • Michael Christie’s The Beggar’s Garden
  • Joel Bakan’s Childhood Under Siege: How Big Business Targets Children
  • Howard White’s A Hard Man to Beat: The Story of Bill White, Labour Leader, Historian, Shipyard Worker, Raconteur

This prestigious literary prize is granted to a B.C. writer who has achieved an outstanding degree of social awareness in a new book published in the preceding calendar year. The winner of the George Ryga Prize receives a commemorative bust of George Ryga, plus advertising for the winning book.

Three New Streaming Video Collections

The Library has purchased three new streaming video collections from Alexander Street Press. These online videos cover a range of subject areas, and can be viewed on any device with an Internet connection. Videos range in length and vary from short five minute demonstrations to full-length award-winning documentaries.

Copyright popturfdotcomInstructors may show any video within class, and students can watch from home or on-campus. Videos can be viewed using both computers and mobile devices.

Three new collections:

  • Ethnographic Video Online: Volume 1
    • Ethnographic Video Online contains more than 500 hours of classic and contemporary documentaries produced by leading video producers in the discipline; previously unpublished footage from working anthropologists and ethnographers in the field; and select feature films.
  • Ethnographic Video Online: Volume 2
    • Classic and contemporary documentaries, unpublished footage from renowned anthropological archives, field recordings, and more. Volume II features content from Royal Anthropological Institute (RAI), ZED, and Documentary Educational Resources (DER).
  • Filmakers Library Online
    • Award-winning documentaries with relevance across the curriculum—race and gender studies, human rights, globalization and global studies, multiculturalism, international relations, criminal justice, the environment, bioethics, health, political science and current events, psychology, arts, literature, and more.
