AskAway Online Librarian Chat Service – Opens Jan. 20th at 10 am

AskAwaybannerAskAway is a live chat reference service, with service provided by librarians from across the province. The help AskAway offers is similar to the assistance you receive at library reference desks. Librarians can assist with finding materials , brainstorming  search terms, and discovering information.

Find links and chat boxes on the Library website, within databases and research guides, and within OCtopus.

  • using the library
  • finding materials
  • journal databases
  • other library topics

AskAway can be used from home, on campus, or even via your smart phone! Hours are as follows (hours vary during holidays and between terms)

ClockSunday to Thursday – 10:00am – 9:00pm
Friday and Saturday – 11:00am – 5:00pm

Sample questions an AskAway user may ask

  • I need to write a paper on Bill Reid’s The Raven and The First Men, but I do not know where to find good articles on art history topics.
  • How do I use Business Source Complete database? Can you help me with my search?
  • How do I cite class notes in APA style?
  • What is the difference between “scholarly” and “peer-reviewed” journal articles?
  • I am getting too many results when I search – can you help?

Should I be concerned about online privacy?

The personal or identifying information of AskAway users is not collected. The BC Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act states that personal information may not be stored on servers located in the United States without permission. Transcripts of sessions are stored on servers in the US, therefore to comply with BC law, AskAway is not permitted to collect personal information such as names, email addresses, phone numbers etc.
