Canada’s New Copyright Bill Includes Digital Locks

Tuesday, June 15, 2010

All Canadians, whether consumers, creators, businesses, educators or students, are affected by copyright laws. On June 2, 2010 the Copyright Modernization Act (short title) was introduced into the House of Commons by Industry Canada Minister Tony Clement.

Michael Geist comments in his Toronto Star column that “despite a national copyright consultation that soundly rejected inflexible protections for digital locks on CDs, DVDs, e-books, and other devices, the government has caved to U.S. pressure and brought back rules that mirror those found in the United States.  These rules limit more than just copying as they can also block Canadian consumers from even using products they have purchased.”

Lesley Ellen Harris has provided an explanation and summary of the bill in her blog copyrightlaws.com and the  Canadian Library Association has also commented on the bill. For more information try Access Copyright, Fair Copyright For Canada (videos) and the Canadian Encyclopedia article Copyright Law.

Thursday, June 10, 2010

The Penticton campus is ‘under construction’!   A new parking lot and building construction have temporarily pushed parking off-campus.   Parking is available across Channel Parkway (behind the Lordco building) and on Duncan Avenue.
